An AI search optimization audit doesn't start with writing content. It starts with a Phase 0 baseline.
Most teams jump straight into site rewrites and content publishing, then discover they cannot tell whether anything changed because there is no T0 to compare against. The audit fixes that.
1. What Phase 0 records
The audit isn't "is the answer pretty?" — it is what is recordable and comparable.
For each long-tail query, capture at minimum:
- The query (specific to industry + question — avoid head terms)
- The AI platform (Doubao / DeepSeek / Tongyi / Kimi — at least 4 platforms)
- Raw answer (markdown or screenshot)
- Mention y/n
- Mention position (first / top-3 / tail / footnote)
- Citation y/n
- Third-party sources cited (URL list)
- Competitor appearances (brand + position)
- Answer structure (list / paragraph / table)
- Hallucination risk (factual errors?)
- Next action (fix site / publish off-site / fix brand entity)
Mention and citation are different signals — keep them in separate columns. See AI mention vs. citation.
2. Why source mapping comes first
Without seeing which sources AI is currently pulling from, channel decisions are guesswork.
In our Phase 0 data, AI search results for GEO-related questions repeatedly cite CSDN, Zhihu, Sohu, Toutiao, Douyin, Tencent Cloud and Aliyun developer communities. That isn't universal — but it is a useful first-pass priority.
Source mapping yields a table:
| Query | AI's most-cited source | 2nd, 3rd source | Our current content there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Query 1 | CSDN | Zhihu / Sohu | 0 / 0 / 0 |
| Query 2 | Zhihu | Tencent Cloud / CSDN | 1 / 0 / 0 |
This table tells you exactly which platform to publish on next, instead of pouring effort into channels AI doesn't retrieve from.
3. Decision tree after the audit
Each finding maps to a different next action:
| Finding | Next action |
|---|---|
| Core pages not indexed | Fix crawl / sitemap / internal linking |
| Indexed but never mentioned | Strengthen off-site sources and brand co-occurrence |
| Mentioned but not cited | Add citable pages — FAQs, evidence, structure |
| Cites third parties but not your site | Reinforce first-party authority pages |
| Hallucinating brand facts | Run entity disambiguation and fact consistency |
Each branch has its own work estimate, ranging from 1-2 weeks to 4-6 weeks. For specifics on which pages to rewrite first, see Which pages should AI search redesign hit first.
4. Review cadence (T0 / T1 / T2 / T3)
A single audit doesn't show a result. The standard cadence:
- T0 — before changes: establish the baseline (the 11 columns above)
- T1 — site changes + 7-14 days: re-run the same queries, watch indexing and mention
- T2 — off-site posts + 7-21 days: re-run, watch citation and source diversity
- T3 — full round + 3-6 weeks: complete re-test, compare against T0, generate the next iteration list
Same Phase 0 sheet at every checkpoint. The comparison is then automatic. If T1 mentions don't move, the bottleneck is usually answer-first capture. If T2 citations stay zero, the bottleneck is off-site source pool reach.
5. When to run a second audit
The first Phase 0 answers "where are we now." Second-round triggers:
- A T0-T3 round is complete and you're planning the next quarter
- Major business change (new product line, new industry, brand refresh)
- Competitive landscape shifts and AI answers reorder
- A brand hallucination event needs full sweep
Sample size can flex with budget. The 11-column structure stays constant — that's what makes cross-period data comparable.
6. Standard audit deliverables
Our GEO audit hand-off:
- Phase 0 baseline table (30 P0 queries × 4 platforms)
- Source mapping table (AI's most-cited sources per query)
- Decision tree (finding → next action)
- Site capture page rewrite list (priority-sorted)
- Off-site distribution channel priority
- T1 / T2 / T3 review cadence proposal
- Risks & limitations (which data is provisional this round)
Typical turnaround: 3-5 days. This is the GEO project's actual starting point.
